Hi everyone,

This is my first time posting on this site. I am an instrumental music composer. I'm starting to create videos to go along with some of my music so I can have a presense on youtube and I've found some really great videos on here to use. What is the common practice for citing if a) there is no instruction, b) any contact info given on the video doesn't work?

Do I just go ahead and give credit in the description of my youtube video to the person whose name appears on the original video and hope for the best? I'm certainly not looking to put these videos out for sale, just to show on youtube and possibly at some local film festivals that have music video categories.

Thanks for your input.

Hi,

As far as I know (but I could be wrong), if the film is in the public domain, you can post it on Youtube in either the original form (+ original soundtrack), or with a totally new soundtrack (made by yourself). Some distributors re-release public domain material with their own soundtrack, and use that as a reason to ask people to withdraw material posted on Youtube.

Hope this helps.

The video I made and posted about last year went on to win 2 awards and screen in film festivals in 3 different countries haha. So hopefully it was OK :-) I'm not selling the thing though so I'm assuming it's fine. You can check out the video here:

Thanks for the response :-)
